Mohawk hockey begins year 2-0

MASON CITY — After trailing 2-0 at the start of the second period, the Mohawk Hockey Club scored four unanswered goals in a 4-2 victory over Dubuque at the North Iowa Ice Arena on Sunday.

“We started a little slow,” Mason City coach Mark Hicks said.

Spenser Popinga followed up Saturday’s hat trick with two more goals while Greg Hepperly and Ben Juhnke rounded out the scoring for the Mohawks.

“It was a good opening weekend for us,” Hicks said. “It was good for guys to get their feet wet in league play.”

The Mohawks (2-0-0-0) travel to Cedar Rapids for a two-game weekend series on Saturday.
