The North Iowa Ice Sports Association (also known as the Mason City Youth Hockey Association), is a 30 year-old non-profit volunteer organization. It provides ice sports activities for nearly 200 North Iowa youth hockey players, 50 adult players and approximately 150 figure skaters, who are members of the North Iowa Figure Skating Club. Our skaters practice and compete for six months each year, in the North Iowa Recreational Arena, located on the fairgrounds on the west edge of
In addition, a girl's and women's hockey team is growing strong. As a service to the community, we open the doors for public skating. Last season, the arena was open to public skating for 180 hours. Groups and parties can also rent the arena for get-togethers during ice season.
Youth Hockey: Our Purpose and Goals
To provide a facility and the opportunity for the youth of
- learning the skills necessary to play hockey
- to participate in a physical activity
- to teach sportsmanship
- to promote the development of each player's hockey skills to the fullest potential through practice and competitive recreation in the form of organized hockey play.
How Our Association Functions
According to the by-laws, the Board of Directors of the North Iowa Ice Sports Association, is immediately responsible to the membership of the association. Membership in the organization is through Fall registration.
The Board of Directors is the governing body for the North Iowa Sports Association (NIISA). The Board is fiscally and organizationally responsible for all aspects of operating the arena, including wages and salaries of its employees. It is responsible for the successful operation of the concession stand and for scheduling of events during the tenancy of the association.
Budgets are projected by each of the following committees: 1) Arena Operations; 2) Youth Hockey; 3) High School; and 4) Referees. These must be submitted to, and approved by the Board.
Maintenance
The budget for arena operation and maintenance is just under $300,000 for the six months we occupy the arena. Our association is responsible for all maintenance during that time. This includes maintaining the Zamboni resurfacing machine as well as all ice making equipment. Help our staff take care of it.
